Spanish soccer player Jenni Hermoso has accused Luis Rubiales of sexually assaulting her after a non-consensual kiss on the lips after the Spain's World Cup victory last month, the country’s prosecutors’ office said Wednesday.
Rubiales, who is the president of the Spanish soccer federation, was provisionally suspended by FIFA for at least 90 days after he refused to step down. He claimed he was a victim of a "witch hunt" by "false feminists."
The federation then threatened legal action against Hermoso for refusing to accept Rubiales’s version of the kiss.
Hermoso denied that the kiss was consensual and prosecutors in Spain have already started an investigation into whether the kiss would be classified as a sexual assault. She testified on Tuesday and the prosecutor's office said the complaint will be processed "as soon as possible."
The legal complaintcomes a day after the federation fired Jorge Vilda, the coach of the women's Spanish World Cup team, following years of complaints from players that Vilda was unprofessional.
