The 2024 Emmys "In Memoriam" segment may have forgotten this beloved star, but her legacy lives on.
During the Sept. 15 award show at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences took a moment to honor members of the television industry who have passed away over the last year, which included Shannen Doherty, Bob Newhart, and Gena Rowlands, among others.
However, viewers pointed out that Shelley Duvall—who died in July at age 75—was not among those among those who received a tribute during the the section, which featured a performance from Jelly Roll.
"How did Shelley Duvall not make it into the segment?? #Emmys" one X user asked, while another wondered, "How could they forget Shelley Duvall?!"
Others speculated that Shelley—who earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program in 1992 for her children's series Shelley Duvall's Bedtime Stories, as well as appeared in TV shows including Maggie Winters, Faerie Tale Theatre and Frasier—may have been left out on account of being best known for her film roles, which include The Shining, Popeye, 3 Women and Annie Hall.
"I think she was more a film actress than a tv one," one X user guessed. "She'll probably get into the Oscars in memoriam."
This isn't the first time an iconic performer has been left out of the "In Memoriam" segment. Back in 2022, fans were outraged when Olivia Newton-John was absent from the tribute that honored late legends including Betty White, Bob Saget, Sidney Poitier and James Caan.
And while the Grease star—who died in August of that year at age 73 following a 30-year battle with breast cancer—did receive a mention on the Emmys' online In Memoriam page, viewers were disappointed that the live telecast didn't celebrate her impressive career, which included appearances in TV series like Sordid Lives: The Series, Bette, Murphy Brown and Ned and Stacey.
"Hey Emmys, that was a beautiful In Memoriam tribute," one user wrote on X at the time, "but you left out Olivia Newton-John."
Another added, "She is and always will be an icon and you forgot her????"
Of course, Olivia's legacy was celebrated in other ways. In the weeks following her passing, her husband John Easterling shared sweet words about the beloved actress.
"She was the most courageous woman I've ever known," John wrote on Instagram at the time. "Her bandwidth for genuinely caring for people, for nature and all creatures almost eclipses what is humanely possible."
He added, "It is only the grace of God that has allowed me to share the depth and passion of her being for so long."
